Try to go for a .com – Today there are several TLDs, cTlds my preference is always getting a .com. One main reason is every one in the world are much practiced in typing .com at the end of site. People will not crack their head whether you site ends with .net or .org

Keep it short or make it readable – Keep your domain name as short as you can, if not go for a easily readable name. Example is talkonsomething ( its 15 characters so its long but its easily readable and any one can remember it ).
Give main focus on Keywords – People majorly come from search engines so your site must be found in search engines. You domain name itself can be your primary keyword.
Don’t stylize your domain name unless you are famous – Stylizing is now one of the drawbacks in domain names. Some sites like delicious.com also had del.icio.us (its a .us domain) might be at the start of the site it would be difficult to type in and you might loose few visitors. You can stylize your domain when your project is famous or you are
